James Purnell joined the University of the Arts London (UAL) on 1 March 2021 as President and Vice-Chancellor.
UAL's strategy is to design the university around its social purpose and the difference creativity can make.
Prior to this, he held positions in both politics and media. James served as a Member of Parliament for nine years, holding various ministerial positions, including Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. He has also worked in the broadcasting sector, serving as Director of Strategy and Digital at the BBC. James has also served on the boards of the National Theatre, the Young Vic and the British Film Institute (BFI).
What I love most about my job is the power of creative education. It's a joy to see our students developing their creative practice when they're with us and then going on to change the world, in ways big and small. I love seeing the care that UAL colleagues put into developing our students and making an impact through research, KE and engaging in society.
